First year at YWI
The fun thing about YWI is the people and teachers. Everyone is so nice and creative. The teachers are very nice and help you whenever you need help. I have learned a lot here, ranging from tone to “show not tell.” Every morning when we arrive we free write or have a guided free write in which the teacher talks to us until everyone has something to write about. Then we will have a mini lesson of some sort, like learning how to write with tones. All the people that come to visit also teach us, like Jack Powers, who taught us about poetry. It is a lot of fun to be here!
Life
Even if you think you are,
You are never alone.
You have to have someone
Even if you’re not blood related.
A friend, perhaps.
Someone to love
And someone to love you back.
Life is like an ocean
You can have a routine life,
Where you know what you’re going to do
And when you’ll do it.
Just like the routine wave
That hits the beach’s soft sand
Every few seconds
And leaves its mark
Or you can have a life that just broke down.
You are crashing down because something happened
Like a large wave accidentally coming in
Hitting all the rocks along the coast line,
Coming falling down
And smashing everything in its path
Or you can have a life where you are mad at the world
Maybe even furious.
Perhaps then you then are the great storm
That hits the ocean
Your fury and rage makes the rain pour
And the lightning strike
Or maybe you are calm and cool
You then are the smooth, placid water
On a peaceful day.
You have a current but still no waves.
Life is also like the ocean
Because you can have the nice
And then the mean.
Maybe you are the
Peaceful little dolphin
Swimming at the top of the water
And giving a show for everyone to see.
Or maybe you like to push people around,
Eat them up then spit them out..
Then you are a shark—
The fierce one that swims about
Looking for his next victim.
Maybe you are shy and solemn
Then you would be the small minnow
With a lot of speed
Going through your day quickly
Not wanting to be noticed
Perhaps you are the type
to light the path for others
Then you would be a lantern fish
With the light to brighten the world
Maybe you are silly
And make others laugh
Then you surely would be
The funny little clown fish
Wandering with the power
To brighten others’ spirits.
Or maybe you are mean
And you kill others with your sting
Then you would be the scorpion fish
With the poison to kill
So, there are many people in life
So you must have someone
Maybe one that is like the routine wave
Or one that is like a dolphin
But, you definitely have someone
Someone to love
And someone to love you back.
