A graduate of CWP-Fairfield’s 2011 Summer Institute for teachers, Shaun is a leader in the world of digital literacy. In addition to presenting at local and national education conferences, he has produced numerous digital podcasts, leading his English classes through the process of writing their stories in text, image, and sound. Last summer, Shaun directed a series of student-focused videos for the 2013 Young Writers’ Institutes. This year, he collaborated with CWP-Fairfield Director Dr. Bryan Ripley Crandall on a ten-minute play festival at Central High School.

Shaun and Co“Shaun did the lion’s share of work,” explained Dr. Crandall. “I introduced him to the work of my former students in Louisville, who wrote short plays based on the Actors Theatre of Louisville’s New Voices/Young Playwrights Festival concept. He brought the idea to his own students, and my graduate students helped workshop the writing process. After Shaun’s theater students edited and revised their scripts, Shaun chose eight plays, which were then cast by the playwrights. After weeks spent memorizing lines and blocking scenes, the students hosted Central High School’s First Annual Young Playwright’s Festival, featuring a run of sold-out performances. According to Central High School Principal Stephen Anderson, “It was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had as a leader in this district. These kids not only performed well, but they wrote the show! I couldn’t be prouder.”

Mr. Mitchell’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and he and his students are already planning for next year’s festival. He’s also taking the show on the road: in April, Shaun and Attallah Sheppard, a spoken word poet and GEAR UP advisor at Bassick High School, led a workshop on producing student plays at the NWP Urban Sites Conference, held this year at Loyola University in Chicago.

CWP-Fairfield applauds our colleague and friend. Shaun is the embodiment of the National Writing Project mission: he is a teacher, a leader, and an agent of reform.
