A DAY IN THE LIFE OF CWP SUMMER LABS.
The first week of summer Labs was filled with wordplay, writing, and wiffle balls. We read, we wrote, we spoke, we played. We expanded our vocabulary and learned to use the power of our words to entertain. We even wore wigs. Well, some of us anyway.

Week Two was poetry in motion. Our young poets read The Crossover, a book in verse about two basketball-playing brothers, and composed poems inspired by the novel’s recurring rhythms. They meditated on the meaning of life in the Zen Garden and mashed up free verse, hip-hop, and haiku. It happened that this Lab was an all-girl affair, and if our poets are any indication, the future looks bright indeed.

By Week Three, our UBUNTU Academy students had five days of intensive reading, writing, speaking, and playing in English under their belts. They’d spent some time playing hoops with the Stags, they’d read The Crossover, and they were ready to put themselves in the capable hands of the intrepid student reporters of the 2014 Journalism Lab…
