The Connecticut Writing Project hosted a special workshop for aspiring young reporters last week. Their goal: to uncover the truth about various topics while consuming as much candy as possible. Some of the hot-button issues included handshaking vs. fist bumping, police brutality, and exactly what was going on in the Ubuntu Academy, which was running simultaneously down the hall.
These students were lucky enough to have Shaun Mitchell, master of the Twittersphere, and Brynn Mandel, ace reporter, as their instructors. Together, the pair were able to cut through some of the sugar rush and get to the meat of the matter(s).
They discussed the essentials for conducting an effective interview, including some important Do’s and Don’ts. Like, don’t lose your bird a la Kanye West on the Today Show… or any show that Kanye West has ever done. To further highlight what a successful interview should look like, the two instructors conducted a mock interview of their own for the students to dissect.
By Day Two, the rookie reporters could be seen scampering all over campus trying to find victims to practice their new skills on. And after they had unleashed repertoire of questions on the public, they were ready to write up (or film) their stories. By Friday, the 1st floor Donnarumma Hall Mac Lab had been transformed into a war room filled with eager reporters trying to get their stories to the editor before their deadline. In this case, the stakes were especially high: missing deadline meant losing first dibs on pizza!
The product of all their hard work was the creation of our very own newspaper, the CWP Chronicle. And our digital maestros produced a series of e-stories posted to YouTube, where they will, we know, get the recognition they deserve!
