I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous going into Poetry Week. Poetry has never been a strong suit of mine, but I was excited to get the chance to learn a lot from our two great teachers, Attallah and Gina. With only four students in attendance, we quickly discovered that small things truly do pack a powerful punch.

She brought down the house, dropped every jaw in attendance, and set the stage for the rest of the week. The girls soon realized that it was a safe environment to express themselves in any which way they wanted.

By the second day, it was evident that a close-knit community was forming in Room 9. At one point, I walked in to steal a chair only to be greeted with a shower of laughter: apparently, it was a girls-only room.

On Friday, family and friends joined us to listen to our young poets perform. They had worked hard during the week to create amazing poetry, and it was great to see the transformation that occurred from Monday through Friday. All four girls broke out of their shells and found the courage to express themselves through poetry in front of a room full of people.
